Newsletter No:_341: April 2011
Welcome to your April Newsletter from the former Herr Flick: we have ways to make you read this.
1 “Improbable Fiction” Bruce reports that the cast are working hard and the show is coming together nicely. There were a few moments of panic when Jamie Boyes announced that he would have to withdraw, owing to increased work demands but happily Roland Butcher has stepped into the breach and is doubtless learning his lines at this very moment. Many thanks, Roland!
Thanks also to Mike Richardson for stepping in as Stage Manager and to Victoria Helstrip for offering to manage the Props Team (and many costume changes !) Bruce is still looking for a couple of able-bodied men to shift chairs between scenes: please contact him (phone number and email address above) if you can help. The set doesn’t paint itself, and Bruce needs painters and decorators at 9 am on Sunday 8th May: again, please contact him about this.
We like to keep a record of our productions, and are looking for a volunteer to operate the DVD recorder on one of the nights of the show. Volunteers to Bruce, please.
2 Cranleigh Community Day This is almost upon us (30th April). Bill Pilcher is doing sterling work putting together the Players’ stand which we believe is a vital part of our role in encouraging new members. Please do go along and support. Better still if you can offer an hour of your time to help man the stand: contact Bill on 278594.
3 Terence Rattigan evenings Mike Fanya (and Victoria Helstrip) have collated an anthology from Rattigan’s music and plays covering the period from 1936 to 1977 to celebrate the centenary of the playwright’s birth, which will be presented on three separate evenings. Those interested in taking part should contact either Mike (277252) or Victoria (275255) by no later than Friday 6th May. The first evening will be in the Village Hall on 10th June. This will be a members’ social evening and admission will be by ticket only (contact Liz Foley from 22nd May onwards – i.e. immediately after “Improbable Fiction”–details above). The tickets will be free of charge but limited to 80 members (i.e. no guests). Please provide your own drinks and bring a contribution of food in the same way as is the custom for after-show parties, ie. it will be added to the communal food pile !
If you would like guests to see the anthology it will be presented at Cranleigh Arts Centre on 16th and 17th June. The box office is being run by the Arts Centre (Tel: 08456 128128, e-mail: boxoffice@cranleighartscentre.org ). There will be wine and nibbles, and tickets will cost £10 – tables will seat 6 people. The Arts Centre can seat 130, but it is your Committee’s wish that members should not completely fill the audience at the Arts Centre: it is more their hope that non-members will attend and be encouraged to find out more about us. That said, please do feel free to bring non-members as guests to Cranleigh, bearing in mind that guests will not be allowed at the Village Hall on 10th June
4 November Production After considerable discussion your committee has asked George Yates to direct “Katherine Howard” by William Nicholson (who wrote the acclaimed “Shadowlands.”) Auditions will be held at the Village Hall on Thursday 23rd and Tuesday 28th June. More details to follow in the May Newsletter.
5 2012 Pantomime The Committee have received one offer to date. There is plenty of time for other proposals to be put forward.
6 Spring 2012 Production Again, one offer has been received, and others will obviously be considered.
7 Olympic Year It has been agreed that in Olympic year it would be appropriate to perform an anthology of sports-related poetry, songs and sketches, probably in May or June. Your committee is looking for a director to take this on. It should be noted that priority should be given to Olympic-related sports rather than say cricket or golf.
8 Future social playreading evenings: It is proposed to hold these on 19th July and/or 18th August: details to be announced.
9 West End shows Liz has discounted tickets for “Legally Blonde” which has received rave reviews. If you like Sheridan Smith this is your chance to see her “in the flesh” at the Savoy theatre – contact Liz.
10 Facebook After considerable hard work by Fudge, it has been decided that the Players can increase their potential audiences/membership by having their own Facebook page. Not everyone will want to join by any means, but you may find in interesting and informative to log on to http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Ewhurst-Players/213156788711581 It is then up to you to decide the extent to which you want to interact. Should you want to upload any information or photographs relevant to the Players onto the Facebook page, you can only do so by emailing Fudge who has generously offered to administer the site on our behalf: the address is ewhurstplayers@hotmail.co.uk
11 The John Pigeon award It was announced at the AGM that this annual award, for outstanding service to the Players, would go to Jay Garland. Nobody could deny that Jay has done a huge amount over the years: thanks, Jay.
