Dear Members
2011 has been a very busy year for the Players thus far, and this Newsletter is packed with dates for upcoming Events and Productions.
But, firstly, we have some very exciting news for you! We have been awarded a NODA SE Region Accolade of Excellence for our Production of ‘Allo ‘Allo. Wendy and Leighton attended the SE Regional Conference on 10th July to collect this – and we send our congratulations to them and to the entire ‘Allo ‘Allo cast and backstage team.
Rattigan Evenings: We would also like to congratulate Mike, Victoria and all those involved both on and off the stage for mounting this most enjoyable and successful anthology. I think everybody who attended on 10th June thoroughly enjoyed the Members’ Social Evening at the Village Hall and the audiences on 16th and 17th June at the Cranleigh Arts Centre were most complimentary. Your committee is already beginning to think about another outing to this lovely venue ………..
Social Play Reading – Tuesday 19th July: EYSC at 7.30 p.m. Please come and enjoy this reading of one of Agatha Christie’s plays. As Anne said in the May Newsletter, “you don’t have to be a budding Laurence Olivier or a Judy Dench to take part – just come and be a part of the experience and you never know, you might even like to read a few lines. We need some new blood, young and old. Members and non-members are all welcome”. Wine and nibbles will be on offer – to help the evening go with a swing. (If you are unable to come to this one, another Social Play Reading is planned for Thursday 18th August – details in the next Newsletter). November Production: “Katherine Howard” by William Nicholson 16th–19th November to be directed by George Yates. George would like to thank his Casting Committee and all those who attended the auditions. The cast has been selected as follows:
Henry VIII: Roland Butcher Katherine: Sophie Shickell Culpeper: Barrie (Fudge) Harrison-Fudge Anne of Cleves: Nicola Payne Duke of Norfolk: Bill Pilcher Cranmer: Barrie Heathcote Lady Jane Rochford: Izzy McLean Wriothesley: Chris Lyth Mary Hall: Gaynor Arnold William: Martin Rodgers Guards: Felix Yates and Jerry Day Ladies & Servants: Katrina McDonald and Rosemarie Morgan-Watson
Rehearsals will start in mid-September and lots of help will be needed backstage. So far George has had the following offers: Assistant Director: Jeannie Metcalf Stage Manager: Victoria Helstrip Costumes: Anne Lyth and Jean Taylor (more helpers always welcome) F.O.H.: Mike Fanya Please ring George on 01483 277354 if you would like to be involved. In particular, help will be needed with Set Design, Set Building, Props, Lighting, Sound and Box Office.
Players Annual Picnic – Sunday 14th August. We are planning to hold another Players Picnic on the Recreation Ground at 4.00 p.m. on Sunday 14th August (weather permitting). Please come along, it’s always great fun – and an opportunity to meet up with friends for a chat, or for a game of Rounders or Croquet if feeling energetic. Bring your own picnic; chairs; rugs; and any games you wish to play. The Committee will arrange for rounders and croquet equipment. This is an afternoon for all the family, young and old – so bring any visitors you may have staying that weekend. Sociable dogs also welcome.
One Day Workshops: On Saturday 15th October we are planning to repeat the successful formula of the Workshop Day we held a few years ago – with an Acting Workshop in the morning; a finger buffet lunch; and a choice of two Workshops in the afternoon. More information in the next Newsletter – but put the date in your diary.
Panto 2012: 26th (charity perf), 27th, 28th 29th Jan & 3rd & 4th Feb 2012 The Committee has accepted Roland’s offer to direct “Sinbad the Sailor” and the Auditions for this will be held on Wednesday 14th September, 7.30 p.m. at the Village Hall and Monday 19th September, 7.30 p.m. at the EYSC. Many of us will be away on holiday between now and then, but make a note in your diary now! This promises to be an excellent pantomime, with a fresh, new script and a large cast. A list of characters will be published in the August Newsletter.
Junior Players – Leaders This is the last call for volunteers to take over from Phil and Carole, who will be retiring as leaders of the Junior Players after their Show in October. If you feel you could spare the time and would like to be involved in helping the young people of the village learn more about drama and the theatre in a fun atmosphere, please ring Phil, Senior Group (01403 823460) or Carole, Junior Group (01483 890215). Without some new leaders, Junior Players will be no more.
