The Ewhurst Players
Looking back over the last 40 years there have been so many successful, innovative, entertaining and dramatic Ewhurst Players productions that have taken place on the Village Hall stage.
We started off in a very small way! Our first production had a £10.00 lighting board, merely on/off switches. Our first Pantomime – costumes mostly provided by the cast themselves – wedding dresses (their own) for the chorus — the chorus of Ducks clad in swimming flippers painted yellow! Our first step into serious drama with “A Man for All Seasons” – we sold few tickets for the first performance but on the following morning the telephones started to ring ..and performances after that were sold out. Our reputation had started to grow.
So many outstanding performances. Over the years The Players have won nine NODA awards. Productions that were particularly innovative “Time of my Life” and “Becket” were performed in ‘The Round’ in the body of the Hall. Our constant very high standard of both costumes, sets, and stage effects, “Oliver” – with London bridge, street lights lit along its length – flown “in against a Victorian London skyline back drop. The production of “Witness for the Prosecution” which won an award for its very realistic court scene. The scenery was later loaned out to other groups. One reviewer wrote of a production…. ”These are the best backstage, set and costume crews in the business” More recently – our November 2016 production of ‘Voyage Around My Father’ also received the NODA accolade of excellence.
Members of The Players have over the years also performed a number of Anthologies, (programmes of poems, readings and music) both in the Village Church and the Village Hall – commemorating great events from VE day to the Golden Jubilee, WW1 to The Millennium. But The Players have been so much more than that.
From the beginning The Ewhurst Players have always been a “company”. A company that was part of the Community in which they lived. They have always been prepared to put on performances to raise funds for village events. Each year the members give generously from their own funds to both local and national charities. From the beginning The Players have supported the Village Hall itself, both financially, and on many occasions, practically, by decorating, updating and improving the the Hall which is, after all, the home of the company. The early players helped to improve and refurbish the Green Room area. They have installed both a fine lighting and sound system which is also used by other organisations and users of the Hall. It is no wonder that The Ewhurst Players have a loyal committed audience who support them just as The Players support their village community.
